Commissioned by Copper Alloys Ltd, this model showcases our ability to design, manufacture, and finish a high-quality display piece using advanced 3D printing and traditional model-making techniques.
Design and 3D Printing Process
The creation of this model was a true exercise in precision. With no 3D CAD files available, we designed the entire model from scratch using reference images and technical documentation. Every detail, from the sail-mounted periscopes to the intricate panel lines and vents, was carefully replicated in CAD before moving into the manufacturing phase.
Once the digital model was complete, we 3D printed the submarine using ABS-like resin, chosen for its durability and fine detail resolution. This material ensures a smooth, high-quality finish, making it ideal for both painted display models and unpainted kits for hobbyists.
Custom Decals and Finishing Touches
After printing, each model undergoes meticulous hand-finishing. The surface is sanded, primed, and airbrushed to achieve the distinctive dark grey hull of the real Astute-class submarines. Custom decals were designed specifically for this model, ensuring accuracy in scale markings, hatches, and operational insignia. These decals were printed using high-resolution techniques to maintain crisp details that enhance the realism of the final model.
Following painting and decal application, each model is sealed with a high-quality matte varnish to protect the finish and ensure long-term durability.
The Premium Oak Plinth
For those seeking a truly high-end display piece, we offer a premium variant of the model mounted on an oiled oak plinth. This plinth is crafted from solid oak, treated with natural oils to enhance its grain and protect the wood. It features solid brass stand-offs, giving the submarine an elegant floating effect.
The underside of the plinth is lined with green felt, providing a soft, non-slip base that protects surfaces. Additionally, a custom plaque can be affixed to the plinth, making it ideal for corporate gifts, commemorative displays, or collectors.
